NorthStone evolved from a passion for all things northern. Having grown up on the west coast of Scotland before travelling all over the world with work, eventually the North beckoned again. I started with a small jewellery collection, specialising in wire weaving, and over the past few years this has broadened to include sculpture work and mixed media projects.
Northumberlandia heart pendant
My first jewellery designs were made was when I was living in Northumberland, one of the most rugged coastlines in Britain. The Lindisfarne designs were inspired by the Holy Island itself, with my signature 'Causeway Cobble' chain reminding me of the cobblestones leading across the sea at low tide.
From this initial idea came other designs inspired by the landscape around me, whether using a particular movement of wire or colours or design element to represent it. Having now moved north of the border to the Solway Coast, expect to see more Celtic influences come into my jewellery designs.
I have always been fascinated by history and how it has affected lives throught the centuries, landscapes and culture, and how art has mirrored the priorities of the day. You will often see references to history in my descriptions, whether fact or legend, telling you where my inspiration for the project came from.
My wirework has further developed into wire art and sculpture design, and just recently I have developed an interest in combining mixed media with wirework. Becoming an accredited tutor for Powertex UK and launching new workshops with this product was the first step in this journey and although wire art will always remain my first love, I am excited to see where these new avenues will lead.
